One common challenge we face is how we perceive ourselves in relation to others. Often, we focus on what skills, job titles, finances, education, or achievements we have obtained, and use these external benchmarks to determine our worth. However, this perspective is fundamentally flawed. We are unaware of the obstacles others have faced or the opportunities they’ve had.
A much fairer and kinder approach is to look inward. We should consider who we were versus who we have become by reflecting on the new skills we have acquired, the knowledge we have gained and the successes we have achieved despite the challenges and opportunities we have encountered.
This concept is particularly relevant in education, where many students compare themselves to their peers and question how they measure up. My students are encouraged to think about how they felt at the beginning of the course compared to the end. How much have they learned? What progress have they made? By focusing on our personal growth, we gain a more meaningful and rewarding perspective.
